"Wonderfalls" was
an incredibly funny show that apparently almost none of the Nielsen families watched.
Premiering on FOX in March 2004, it lasted for only four episodes but had such
a loyal following from a large enough group that the full thirteen episode season
was released on dvd. It has since been picked up in reruns on the Logo network. Smart,
odd, unpredictable ... it's an inventive comedy centered on the character of Jaye
(Caroline Dhavernas, Lost and Delirious), who is "over educated and
unemployable" and works retail in a tourist shop in Niagara Falls. One day
little knickknacks and statues start talking to her, and when she follows their
instructions, what may seem to be isolated events all find some connection. Jaye
is biting and sarcastic, not a people person, but funny as heck. One of
the main supporting characters is Jaye's sister Sharon (Katie Finneran, Miss
Congeniality 2), a lawyer, a lesbian and in the closet. But she's not
questioning, not experimenting or bi. She's a lesbian who's just not out to her
family, except Jaye. In the first episode, Sharon meets Beth (Kari Matchett, Men
with Brooms), and by episode two, they're making out, although the FOX censors
would not allow showing the two women kiss on screen. Beth appears in a few other
episodes as well, but Sharon is a hilarious constant in the series. |
