In 1994, Geraldine Granger
(Dawn French, "French and Saunders," "Wild
West") arrived in the village of Dibley to replace the elderly vicar
who had passed away. At the time, there were very few female vicars in the Church
of England, and she faced opposition from conservative church members ... and
so the British sitcom "The Vicar of Dibley" began. The popular
series ran for three seasons, filled with eccentric villagers who grew to love
their chocoholic wisecracking leader. In 2004, the whole cast came back for a
series of specials, including "Merry Christmas." As the congregation
prepares for a tenth anniversary celebration for Gerry, she and her assistant
Alice (Emma Chambers) discuss how women vicars are no longer so controversial.
She jokes that she's thinking of declaring herself gay to support the rights of
church leaders to be openly gay, and then chats about the celebrities she would
want to sleep with if she were. Dimwitted Alice is a little freaked. Later
model Rachel Hunter just happens to need a place to change, and she drops in to
the vicar's house, kissing her as she leaves. Seeing Rachel in her underwear,
Alice tells everyone that Geraldine is a lesbian. The parish council seems pleased,
since it's something exciting going on. This episode had me laughing out
loud with Dawn French's brilliant comedy and a great deal of lesbian innuendo.
The episode is available on a single dvd along with the "Happy New Year"
special. |
