The Gymnast is a film
about taking charge of your life, making hard decisions to move it forward, rather
than simply going through the motions, having the courage to find happiness and
love. Jane (Dreya Weber) is pushing 43, a top level gymnast whose career ended
twenty years ago with a horrible injury. She's stuck in a marriage to a man who
pays little attention to her, worried she should have had a baby before it's too
late, and maintaining a fitness level unheard of for someone who no longer competes. Then
it all begins to change when she is invited to perform with a Las Vegas style,
high flying aerial act. Happily using her talents again, Jane is drawn to Serena
(Addie Yungmee), a graceful dancer who shares the air with her. A closeted lesbian,
Serena is dealing with her own issues about coming out to her elderly Jewish parents,
who adopted her from Korea. As the spectacular act comes together, the
two women make sparks. Athletic, graceful and sexy, no one can take their eyes
off of the duo during their big audition, and they create a passionate performance
both on and off the ground. Go rent or buy this film! It's one of the most
real, emotional stories I've seen in some time, and the visuals are unique and
amazing. Watch through the credits for an even more powerful ending.
