You've seen Sandra before
- the lesbian character of Nancy on "Roseanne" and appearances on the
second season of "The L Word." But if you haven't seen her on stage,
you're missing something. The lesbian (or perhaps bisexual) Bernhard made
her name initially with the one woman show Without You I'm Nothing. I'm
Still Here...Damn It! ran successfully on Broadway and was filmed in San Francisco.
It's comedic with biting satire and comments on celebrities and pop culture. She
talks about hanging out and kissing Courtney Love, her friendship with Madonna,
and the time that she and her girlfriend had hash brownies in Amsterdam. She's
also a great singer, with renditions of "Midnight Train to Georgia"
and Fleetwood Mac's "Nightingale," plus a lovely Moroccan prayer. It's
in contrast to the risqué nature of the rest of the act and Bernhard's
see through dress. She is very pregnant, wearing only a thong underneath, nipples
visible. The dvd extras, which didn't make it into the shortened one hour
show that aired on HBO, are very funny as well. In particular, she does a wonderful
impression of Liza Minnelli and a joke about Rosie O'Donnell that would make me
blush to repeat it. She's outrageous. |
