The 2005 Queer Comedy Festival
in Santa Monica, California is condensed into this collection of its funniest
stand up and sketch comedy moments. Over twenty comics are represented, including
lesbians Lea DeLaria ("Further Tales of the City," Edge of Seventeen,
The First Wives Club, Out There in Hollywood, Homo
Heights), Page Hurwitz, Karen Ripley, Sabrina Matthews (Coming
Out Party, Laughing Matters...
More!, Bam Bam and Celeste), Stephanie Howard and Jen Slusser. DeLaria
is outrageous in her comments on George and Laura Bush and their daughters, as
well as lamenting "the pregnant lesbian thing." She headlined the festival
and closes the dvd by singing "Butch Woman Blues." Another show
stealer is Nora Burns (The New Women, The
Broken Hearts Club) from The Nellie Olesons, a comedy troupe. She spoofs
right winger Ann Coulter (see clips
here). Gay comics include Bob Smith (Coming
Out Party), Jason Stuart (Gia, Out There in Hollywood),
Mark Davis (Out There, Out There 2), Andre Kelley, Jerry Calumn,
Jason Dudey, Roy Cruz, Charlie Vaughn, Babloo, Ariana and Bill Cruz. Some backstage
discussion with many of the comics is integrated into the dvd. Overall,
it's great fun and full of laughs. For some comics like Matthews, Hurwitz or Smith,
some of the material may be familiar from other television or dvd appearances,
but it's still funny the second time around! |
