The Barnes family of doctors
inhabits the sitcom world of "Out of Practice." Parents Stewart (Henry
Winkler), a gastroenterologist, and Lydia (Stockard Channing, Bright Young
Things, A Girl Thing, The
Business of Strangers, The Truth About Jane, The First Wives
Club, Bitter Moon), a hotshot cardiologist, are divorced. Brother Ben
(Christopher Gorham) is a mild mannered marriage counselor; brother Oliver (Ty
Burrell) a self-centered plastic surgeon; and sister Regina (Paula Marshall) an
emergency room doctor. Stewart is also dating the much younger Crystal (Jennifer
Tilly, Relax... It's Just Sex, Bound, Embrace
of the Vampire), his secretary. Within the first ten minutes of the
pilot, the siblings are discussing dating and significant others, and Regina's
status as a lesbian is bantered about. She and her brother Oliver both have an
eye for beautiful women. In episode seven, Regina and her mother have a
nice discussion about Lydia's support for her daughter, this following Lydia being
mistaken for a lesbian herself. Episode nine sees a flashback of Regina coming
out to her family seven years earlier when she steals Oliver's date, and two of
her ex-girlfriends actually kiss in episode twelve. It's an adult comedy
with a great cast and a lesbian character who is acknowledged as such by her family.
Regina's sexual orientation is referenced in every episode, perhaps a good example
of the rare mainstreaming of lgbt characters on television. |
