| Lonnie (Eddie Griffin), G (Anthony
Anderson) and Dom (Michael Imperioli, "The Sopranos," I
Shot Andy Warhol) are all Philly guys who grew up together and now live
together as adults. Their girlfriends also all get pregnant at the same time. The
film mainly focuses on clueless new daddy and ethnic jokes, but it also shows
the men growing into fatherhood and dealing more maturely with life and relationships.
Lonnie and G get married, while Dom has other issues to deal with. He would like
to be a part of his daughter Jasmine's life, but her mother Nia (Joanna Bacalso,
Half Baked) tells him that he was just an
office fling. Nia falls in love with Venus (Naomi Gaskin), her midwife, and the
two women start a family. Eventually Dom understands that he won't ever have Nia
back, and his acceptance means that he is allowed to also be a father to his daughter. I
was afraid before I watched this film and really pleasantly surprised by the positive
depiction of these two women. Here's why - it was directed by out lesbian Cheryl
Dunye (Stranger Inside, The Watermelon
Woman, The New Women). Also features
the hilarious Amy Sedaris ("Strangers
with Candy") as the birthing class teacher. |
