Mean Girls doesn't
feature a lesbian character, but it's one of the most entertaining comedies I've
seen in a while. What it does do is highlight the cliques and cruelty of high
school, including a girl who is called a lesbian just because she's different.
Part of the "art freaks," Janis Ian (Lizzy Caplan, Orange County)
is dubbed a dyke by the "plastics" (the mean girls). Even though she's
straight, she uses this to her advantage by telling everyone that she has "a
big ol' lesbian crush" on the leader of the plastics. Her best friend is
Damian (Daniel Franzese), who is "too gay to function," and they go
so far as to wear matching tuxes to the Spring Fling dance. Janis does start dating
a boy at the end, confirming for the audience that she really is straight. Janis
and Damian turn out to be the nicest kids in the school. The journey of Cady (Lindsay
Lohan), the main character, is both an entertaining and educational one as spurred
on by Janis, she first seeks to be mean to the mean girls, but then becomes one
herself for a time. Good messages about just being yourself. Written by
Tina Fey of "Saturday Night Live," who also plays a math teacher. ("At
Seventeen" is playing in the background for Janis Ian's character at one
point. The name is a great touch!)
