If you're looking for a cute
romantic comedy, writer/director Kelli Herd's production is one of the better
films to come out of the 1990s. The acting isn't perfect (especially outside of
the female leads), but the crazy town of Azalea Springs provides plenty of laughs
as girl meets girl and boy meets boy. The main story finds Alex (Keri Jo
Chapman) volunteering at the local AIDS hospice where she runs into Grace (Teresa
Garret), a nurse who is an old friend from school. Grace recently left her husband
and moved back home, revealing that she is a lesbian. Alex's best friend
Spencer (John Hallum) has been stirring up a rumor by telling a gossip that the
reason people in town are gay is because there's something in the water. Soon
even Alex's big haired mother is buying bottled water, and it's the talk of the
town. Meanwhile, Mark (Derrick Sanders) attends anti-gay conversion meetings,
where he meets Tomas (Timothy Vahle), a handsome painter. The two hook up and
reject the ridiculous meetings. Alex is curious ... and gets herself up
to speed by renting all of the lesbian movies she can find at the video store.
She and Grace are found kissing in the store room, to the horror of her mother
and husband. Grace and Alex face Azalea Springs' homophobia and fall in love (with
a nice love scene). |
