If you missed this Bravo
reality television series, try it out on dvd. We follow two gay and two lesbian
couples during the wedding planning process, on the big day, and find out afterwards
how their lives have changed by going through the ceremony. (None of them have
a legal marriage license, by the way, just a desire to commit themselves to one
another in front of family and friends.) Throughout the eight episodes,
there are the usual stresses of wedding planning, but we also see the obstacles
faced by same sex couples when trying to book venues. Some deal with parents who
may not be entirely supportive or won't even attend at all.
Harley and
Scott put together a week of activities in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Dan and Gregg
hire Hollywood wedding planners and stage a huge party. Dale and Eve go with an
elegant restaurant venue and a Native American ceremony; and Sonja and Lupe hold
their wedding in the backyard of a friend's home.
Even if reality tv is
not your cup of tea, "Gay Weddings" serves up situations that we just
don't get to see on screen very often. I found myself with a tear in my eye on
occasion, especially with my favorite couple, Lupe and Sonja, and Sonja's very
supportive 18-year-old son Brandon.
