The movie's title graphics
begin by telling us that the story takes place in Carson County, West Virgina.
It's hard not to roll your eyes or give up on the film already at such a typo
in the name of the state (even in a low budget production). In a flashback
to 1932, we learn that one farmer brings in a good corn crop when all around him
other people just grow dust. Elijah Baker's secret is that he is a murderer and
uses real people as his scarecrows, somehow ensuring his harvest by periodically
dripping blood in the fields. Now back to the present. Sean (Don Digiulio)
finds out that he has inherited an old farm where no one has lived since the 1930s.
He, his girlfriend Jess (Jessica Dunphy), and a group of friends that includes
lesbian couple Alix (Amiee Cox) and Darcy (Jeanie Cheek), go to check out the
farm. One of the favorite activities is skinny dipping in the pond, so there's
some nice gratuitous nudity and kissing between the girls. They're there
during the Harvest (Blood) Moon, and scarecrows come back to life to seek vengeance
with scythes. How many of our friends can survive until sunrise? The unlucky ones
are run through and then hung like scarecrows. Some good action and surprises
at the end, although there's quite a bit of cheesy dialog and bad effects. |
