Helen (Patty Duke) and Angie
(Sara Botsford) are a couple who are also fashion designers. They decide to have
a baby and first go the adoption route, only to find that adoption regulations
will not allow "two women who live together" to adopt even a child who
is having a hard time finding a home. They're put off by the idea of artificial
insemination and go about finding the perfect sperm donor. They decide
to use their photographer Terry (Saul Rubinek) as a stud, and he can't wait to
sleep with Helen, since he's also secretly in love with her. Helen looks at Terry's
magazine centerfold while he's going at it, while Angie rides Sven (Alan Duruisseau).
They talk to one another on the phone while they're having sex with the men, telling
each other that they love the other. Parts of these scenes were supposed to be
comedic, but I also found it a bit disturbing. Surprise! Both Helen and
Angie are pregnant. Although Helen tragically loses her baby, she and Angie are
both able to nurse Angie's baby and make the family they wanted. Pretty amazing
for a film made over twenty years ago. It is dated, but still relevant. |
