Almost Normal starts
out with a great concept - what would it be like if being gay or lesbian were
normal, and it's straight people who are ostracized and ridiculed? In a Back
to the Future like story, Brad Jenkins (J. Andrew Keitch) gets to find out. On
his 40th birthday, perpetually single Brad travels to his hometown. With a mother
who still won't acknowledge that he is gay, he just wants to be normal and happy
for once. That night, Brad wrecks his car ... and when he wakes up, he's
gone back in time more than 20 years to be a high school student again. But this
time things are different. In the hallways at school, girls are kissing girls
and boys are kissing boys. Mom (Virginia Smith) lives with her partner Louise
(Mary Douglass), kissing her in front of Brad. Couples find parental partners
to reproduce, but marriages are only between same sex couples. Straight
people are called "breeders" and "hole punchers," beat up
outside of straight bars, and subject to anti-straight arguments and sentiments
that throw the usual anti-gay statements on their heads. It produces some "wow"
moments to see life this way. An odd plot move in the end of the film makes
for message confusion, and some over the top acting is a problem. As long as your
expectations are not too high though, this is a pleasant comedy that will likely
make you smirk a little. |
