Xena fans will recognize When Love Comes director Garth Maxwell, who is gay, as the director of many ‘Hercules’ and ‘Xena’ episodes. This is a New Zealand production, and it also stars ‘Young Hercules’ lead Dean O’Gorman as Mark, a gay young man who becomes friends with two women. Sally (Sophia Hawthorne) and Fig (Nancy Brunning) have a band together and are a couple, but at one point during a night of drugs, Mark has sex with one of them while the other woman watches and participates to a limited extent. Much of the story focuses on former hustler Mark, his older partner Stephen (Simon Prast), and Stephen’s washed up singer friend Katie (Rena Owen).
Three different couples – gay, straight and lesbian – deal with issues of friendship, love and sex. How do you know when love comes? Our three couples find out, but the journey there was a little slow and tedious for me. (AB)
