Before Gloria Swanson played the silent screen star, Norma Desmond, Swanson was a silent film star. In this 1916 short, silent comedy, she appears as a young woman who finds her boyfriend Honey Boy (Bobby Vernon) attracted to another young lady. Her solution is to pass as a man and woo the interloper away from Honey Boy. Quite a madcap plot!
Perhaps there are some cultural queues missing when watching the film almost 100 years later, because the action is difficult to follow. What is clear is that dressed in a suit and hat, Swanson’s character makes the moves on the other woman, until a jealous Honey Boy steps in to beat her up and then discovers the ruse.
On Netflix, you can find this film on the Slapstick Encyclopedia disc 2, in the collection called “Funny Girls: Genders and Their Benders.” (AB)
