Cassie (Melissa Sagemiller) is a new college freshman. One night masked men force her car off the road. Her boyfriend Sean (Casey Affleck, American Pie 2) dies in the wreck, and she then finds herself in some sort of limbo between the living and the dead. It seems her boyfriend wants her to follow him to the afterlife, and there is also some creepy connection to those masked men, who have been seen collecting human blood.
Is the priest (Luke Wilson, Committed, The Royal Tenenbaums) who appears to help her good or evil? Cassie’s best friend Annie (Eliza Dushku, Buffy) and ex-boyfriend Matt (Wes Bentley) both seem to be tied to a dark world. Annie’s lover Raven (Angela Featherstone) is also very ominous and mysterious. (Annie is sleeping with both Raven and Matt.)
And the anticipated lesbian content with Buffy’s Faith? Cassie follows the sounds of lovers in the library and finds Annie and androgynous Raven in quite a passionate embrace, causing Cassie to freak out a little. Later in a club, Raven is going down on Annie when Cassie walks in on them.
It’s a teen thriller with masked killers, many a chase scene and confusion between the living and the dead. Unfortunately, there’s also confusion for viewers, as the plot is a bit difficult to follow at times. Who really survived the accident? (AB)
