Volume 4 of the Full Frame Documentary Shorts dvd collection includes Katherine Leggett’s short film about growing up in the early 1980s in a small Midwestern town. Through the use of home movies, old photos and webcam footage, a picture of her family emerges.
Katherine’s parents met in high school, married and started a family. What neither knew is that both of them were also leading secret lives. Mom and Dad were gay, eventually divorcing, but still living in the closet. Katherine and her mother and siblings moved into a duplex where her mother’s partner and four children lived in the adjoining unit. A door was cut through their mothers’ bedrooms to connect the two, keeping their relationship a secret to the rest of the world.
In only a few minutes, the pain and fear of Katherine and her mother and father are captured quite poignantly. (AB)
