The title of this movie alone made me think it would be cheesy, but She Creature exceeded expectations. It’s a mermaid film in which she is an erotic seductress, but with an edge of horror. Lily (Carla Gugino, Sin City, Jaded) is a sideshow fake mermaid in 1905 Ireland when she and her boyfriend Angus (Rufus Sewell) are approached by an old sailor in possession of a real mermaid (Rya Kihlstedt, Jaded). He warns them about her, but Angus steals the mermaid. He and a reluctant Lily set sail for America to make big money with their prize, never suspecting what awaits them at sea.
Lily in particular is drawn to the mermaid (who is topless) and tries to set her free. But instead of escaping, the mermaid stops to kiss Lily … before eating the man who interrupts them. The mermaid is tranquilized and put back in her tank, but they now know her deadliness.
At the full moon, the real horror begins, and the mermaid transforms into something not quite so beautiful. As she kills the crew, Lily receives not a bite, but a seductive finger trailing her cleavage.
I won’t spoil the ending, but this production has quite an original plot, and if you like horror thrillers, it’s not bad. The mermaid definitely has the hots for Lily! (AB)
