Utena is a girl who dresses like a prince. While attending prestigious Ohtori Academy, she finds a rose signet ring and ends up in a duel. By winning, Utena is engaged to the Rose Bride, who offers herself to Utena but is rebuked. Utena pines for her own (male) prince until she understands that this is her destiny with the Rose Bride. She defends the Rose Bride against others who wish to possess her, since the Bride holds the key to a magical sword that has something to do with a magical castle.
The movie is based on the anime series of the same name, and as a standalone film, the story is a bit confusing. I’m not quite sure what really happens at the end, but the last scene finds them together, naked and kissing
. If you’re curious about anime, Utena seems to be one of the most popular girl-power stories. (AB)
