On the Other Hand, Death

Based on the mystery novels by Richard Stevenson, this is the third in a series of films that feature gay private detective Donald Strachey. Portrayed by out gay actor Chad Allen, Strachey is working on a case that turns into murder. Little does he know at first that this is also related to his friends’ problems with anti-gay harassment.

Dorothy (Margot Kidder, Superman, Death Among Friends, The L Word) and Edith (Gabrielle Rose) are an older lesbian couple dealing with graffiti at their home that escalates to a brick through the window. Dorothy is a high school counselor, and they speculate that it has to do with her support of a gay student.

Strachey is on the case and finds that the couple also happens to be the only ones in the area who refuse to sell their land to a big business developer. Arson, murder and an old boyfriend tie it all together to a corporate land grab.

Also of note is Sebastian Spence as the PI’s partner Tim. Their relationship is shown in a very positive light as a stable professional gay couple. The plot is a bit hokey and unbelievable at points, but it does keep you wondering until the end. (AB)
