Luster is part comedy, part drama, part romance and revolves around the life of Jackson (Justin Herwick), a gay man with blue hair. He’s a poet, a skateboarder and a zine writer who works in an indie record store. The opening scene involves his morning waking up with an orgy full of boys in his bed, and the rest of the film follows Jackson through his crushes, lusts and friendships. Kind of an annoying guy, unless you’re into the cooler than cool type.
One of his fellow record store compadres is Alyssa (Pamela Gidley), a photographer and artist in a relationship with Sandra (Susannah Melvoin). Jackson has been lusting after his cousin Jed (B. Wyatt), but instead, Alyssa and Jed go on a photo shoot. She photographs him nude in the desert, and afterwards, he offers to go down on her. When they return, Jed waltzes into the store declaring himself a lesbian, so it’s quite obvious to Sandra that Alyssa has been up to something with him. Later on Alyssa and Sandra make up, the incident forgotten (for now). (AB)
