So you think you can dance? Leading Ladies is a wacky comedy about a family centered around ballroom dancing competitions. Overbearing mother Sheri is played by Melanie LaPatin, a choreographer and dancer on the show So You Think You Can Dance? Daughters Tasi (Shannon Lea Smith) and Toni (Laurel Vail) are just never good enough for their mother, on the dance floor or in life.
Tasi and her dance partner Cedric are usually the source of Sheri’s ire. Cedric is played by season two So You Can Dance winner Benji Schwimmer. When Tasi becomes pregnant, Sheri doesn’t quite understand why the gay Cedric is involved, but she knows he must be the father!
Now it’s Toni’s chance to show what she can do on the dance floor, but little does mom know that Toni will be the lead with her girlfriend Mona (Nicole Dionne). Toni finally learns to stand up to her mother, while coming out to the world at the same time.
The film is full of dance and music – and it does require some suspension of reality to appreciate. Sheri is especially over the top, and the characters are stereotypes, but you’ll have some fun watching! (AB)
