Phil (Will Ferrell) grew up with Buck (Robert Duvall), a competitive, super-athletic father, but he was always the bench warmer. When it comes time for his son Sam (Dylan McLaughlin) to play soccer, Phil coaches his team of misfits, competing against the team Buck coaches.
The parents of Byong Sun (Elliott Cho), the shortest player on Phil’s team, are a lesbian couple who come to every game. Ann (Rachael Harris, For Your Consideration) is the sensitive one, while Donna (Laura Kightlinger) has a firm handshake and out does Phil in a chest slam.
Neighbor Mike Ditka is enlisted to help coach the team. With some new recruits, they actually start to win, but Phil begins to turn into a different person.
It’s a feel good comedy that isn’t that funny. The lesbian soccer moms are a nice addition, but not key to the story. (AB)
