Im Not ThereJust a quick note on this film. I actually stopped watching in the middle of it, which is very unusual for me. Six different actors portray six different stages of legendary folk singer Bob Dylan’s life. The actors are not playing Dylan himself, but creating characters to reflect themes in Dylan’s life; for example, the train-car hopping African-American boy named Woody Guthrie (Marcus Carl Franklin, Lackawanna Blues). The movie is non-linear, and not being a huge Dylan fan, I was very lost.

The character that most resembles Dylan is 1960s singer, Jude, played by Cate Blanchett (The Lord of the Rings, Notes on a Scandal). Yes, you heard that right. The actress very ably portrays the man and looks quite a lot like Dylan. Blanchett received a well deserved Oscar nomination for the gender bending role.

Heath Ledger (Batman, Brokeback Mountain) represents another, more familiar stage in Dylan’s life. Christian Bale (Batman, Laurel Canyon) and Richard Gere (Pretty Woman, An Officer and a Gentleman) play different life aspects as well.

If you are a Dylan fan, apparently this film is a must see – and it’s been given accolades throughout the press. If you’re not a fan, and especially if you know little about his life and work, this one may be difficult to follow. Blanchett, on the other hand, is impressive. (AB)
