Before it aired, ‘Hex’ was projected to be the British ‘Buffy,’ and over the course of a short two seasons, the series grew a well deserved following of its own.
Cassie (Christina Cole) is a student in an old English manor boarding school. Lesbian roommate, best friend, wise cracking, unique dresser Thelma (Jemima Rooper) fancies Cassie, who suddenly begins developing supernatural powers and some kind of mystical connection to the past. As confusing images and nightmares rack her, it’s Thelma who looks after her, leading Cassie to call her ‘my dyke in shining armor.’
Soon Azazeal (Michael Fassbender), the ancient leader of the Nephelim or fallen angels, begins stalking Cassie, trying to seduce her into his world. On the night that Thelma confronts her, accusing her of flirting when Cassie knows Thelma is in love with her, Thelma is kidnapped by Azazeal and sacrificed.
Is the dead lesbian friend gone for the rest of the show? No, she continues as a central character, reappearing as a ghost seen only by Cassie. Much to her delight, she can now enter Cassie’s dreams (as well as creating an erotic one), but she spends most of her time trying to keep her roommate from falling into Azazeal’s traps. (AB)
