This very original pirate fairytale is a role player’s delight, messing with butch-femme expectations and gender and sexual identity all around.
A baby butch (Chrystal Donbrath-Zinga) and her friend Claudia (Michael-Ann Connor, ‘Noah’s Arc,’ ‘The L Word’) land on an island, where it turns out that only a top virgin butch can help the Queen (Victoria Deschanel, Horsey) by recapturing her ‘treasure’ that was stolen by the King (Joyce Pate).
When Butch and Captain Candy (Raven Courtney) set sail for the King’s cave, Claudia is not allowed on the ship, since she is femme. Suddenly Claudia transforms herself into Easy, a swashbuckling, packing pirate and joins them on their voyage.
Footage of old pirate movies is intercut with the adventure, filled with sexual symbolism as well as scenes of butch pirates taking beautiful women with their leather strap ons. Captain Candy misses the days when butches were tops and femmes never tried to flip them, teaching Butch her traditional ways.
In the end, all of the rules change, and our heroes find love outside the butch-femme confines, even Captain Candy, who deals with an attraction to a femme man. This low budget film really pushes the envelope and is probably best for those very interested in queer identities. (AB)
