French Twist

In many ways, the set up for French Twist is like what you’ll find in scores of online and published lesbian romance stories. A butch dyke helps a beautiful straight housewife and then makes love to her, causing the cheating husband to be pushed aside. I can’t think of any other film with a butch, slightly overweight, forty-something lesbian protagonist.

That’s Marijo (Josiane Balasko), whose van breaks down near the home of Loli (Victoria Abril, 101 Reykjavik, Kika). Loli’s son has blocked the drain in the kitchen sink with a toy, and soon after Marijo knocks on the door, she’s fixed the problem. Loli’s husband Laurent (Alain Chabat) routinely has affairs with other women, but when he finds his wife with Marijo, he predictably goes crazy.

Loli takes Marijo into her bed, letting Laurent stay in the spare room. Eventually, Loli moves between the two beds, on a weekly schedule. The three live together this way for some time, until Marijo’s friend and former lover comes to visit. Loli becomes extremely jealous, and Laurent pounces on his chance to drive a wedge between the two women. Loli needs some space, but Laurent convinces Marijo that she wants her to leave.

And in my mind, this is where the film starts to go downhill a bit, moving away from a fantasy world. Marijo agrees to leave, but only if Laurent will sleep with her to give her a child. This scene is funny, but also has quite a squick factor.

In the end, we see an alternative family in action. Laurent gets to be there as a father, and Loli loves both her husband and Marijo.

Also written and directed by Balasko. (AB)
