Even Cowgirls Get the BluesCowgirls is a very odd movie. Sissy Hankshaw (Uma Thurman, Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction) is born with abnormally large thumbs, perfect for hitchhiking. She spends her life on the road, moving from place to place, never having found somewhere or someone to call home. She’s also the spokesmodel for a feminine hygiene product and travels to a ranch to shoot a commercial. The ranch is run by The Countess (John Hurt), a queen who really finds women distasteful.

Also on the ranch are a gaggle of cowgirls who resemble a lesbian collective. Bonanza Jellybean (Rain Phoenix, she of the famous acting brothers) hooks up with Sissy and her thumbs. The rest of the plot involves drugged whooping cranes, Pat Morita as a wise man of the mountain, federal agents, and a not-so-happy ending. Hmm … maybe it would help if I read the Tom Robbins novel.

The best thing about this film is the soundtrack by kd lang (Salmonberries). The music video for ‘Just Keep Me Moving’ is included. Cameos by Roseanne, Buck Henry, Crispin Glover, Keanu Reeves and Angie Dickinson. (AB)
