Traditionally, a marriage ceremony signals the start of a new life together, but when Edie Windsor and Thea Spyer fly to Toronto to get married, it is a celebration of the 42 years they have already shared.
This delightful and touching documentary directed by Gréta Olafsdóttir and Susan Muska (The Brandon Teena Story) creates a vivid picture of each woman and their life together, from the closeted, pre-Stonewall 1960s to 2007, when, with Thea’s health fading, the couple finally consummates their love in front of Canadian judge.
A collection of still images throughout the film show both women from youth to adulthood and helps illustrate how they navigated their lives of ordinary milestones, political activism and dedication to each other and self. Edie and Thea transcends the typical “we’re gay and got married” genre and creates an intimate picture of how to make a life together, through sickness and health, for richer and poorer and through the bumps and battles of a life less ordinary.
