Welcome to a short documentary about Camp Lavender Hill, a summer camp for the children of gay and lesbian parents. The counselors at the camp are also all gay or have gay parents. It’s an environment where the kids don’t have to be nervous about hiding anything about their families. Most of the time, it’s just a regular summer camp with games, hiking, swimming and sitting around the campfire.
The campers all share a similar background, so they easily talk to one another about their parents and partners and what that means to them. Or they can talk about being teased at school or being called a fag or queer. “We talk a lot about our families. Here, no one will make fun of you,” said one camper. “It helps to know there are other kids out there going through the same thing,” mentioned another.
Two sisters in particular live in a small town where the fact that their mother is a lesbian is kept quiet. Others seem to live with parents who are much more out in the world.
Even if your kids can’t go to camp, this video would likely be a good tool to talk about the issues that arise from having lesbian or gay parents. It is only out on vhs and hard to find. Our copy comes from ebay. (AB)
