Butch Mystique first aired on Showtime during Black History Month in 2004. It’s a rare breed, a documentary focusing on butch-identified African-American lesbians in the San Francisco area. Through interviews, issues of power, lifestyle, masculine/feminine energies, outward appearance, and identity are examined.
There aren’t any pat answers and definitions, but personal stories about individual lives and identities. Also covers the sometime dangers of being perceived as a black male, the hatred of some straight men towards butches, the attractions of some gay men, and the issue of sexual penetration. They’re all ‘women who go outside of that female box that we’re told we have to fit in.’ (AB)
