After a very successful stint as a performer and then head writer on Saturday Night Live (SNL), Tina Fey returned to television as the creator and lead actress in 30 Rock. The show is about what goes on behind the scenes of a fictional sketch comedy show much like SNL.
Fey plays Liz Lemon, the lead writer, and much of the Emmy Award winning comedy is about dealing with her obnoxious boss Jack (Alec Baldwin). One episode is of interest to us and quite funny.
103 Blind Date
Air date: October 26, 2006
Jack is concerned that Liz doesn’t have much of a social life, so he sets her up on a blind date with his friend Thomas, even going so far as to give her money at lunch to go get a new outfit. “Thomas” turns out to be Gretchen Thomas, played by Stephanie March (Alex Cabot from Law and Order: SVU).
Liz, being straight, is surprised that her boss set her up with a lesbian. But during dinner, she does spend time thinking about the other times that people thought she was gay. When she confronts Jack the next day, he tells her that her shoes are “definitely at least bi-curious.” She isn’t offended, but duly notes that she is straight.
Liz invites Gretchen to a company party where everyone seems to think that they should date. She describes them as Oprah and Gayle, but alas, Gretchen isn’t interested in a gal pal, and Liz is single again. (AB)
